I found this over at the Skepticality site. Is this cool or what?

DNA wrapping and replication animation.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

That earns a major WOW factor!

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

I'll say! I had no idea that these processes happened with such speed, equivalent to the rotation speed of a jet engine turbine.

Most cellular processes happen very rapidly.

This is something I know exactly nothing about. What did I just watch?

You saw how a six foot strand (molecule) of DNA wraps itself up to become one of several chromosomes that fit nicely into a single cell. You saw how all that information is stored in a very tiny place. Then you saw how it replicates itself, allowing for cell division and passing the identical information on to the new cell.

Oh. Okay. It's not all that difficult to grasp, is it? I'll go back and watch it a couple more times. It really is a neat presentation, as might be expected from PZ.

Thanks!

Well, the truth of it is that the process is very complicated and would probably take much more than this film to understand it completely. But it is a great introduction to a fascinating subject. Plus, the animation is just plain cool…
