Mooner......

Call me dumb, ignorant, and boeotian; but I just don't get it! I obviously have not kept abreast of recent neologistic developments regarding the meaning of "C", so be appropriately contemptuous and properly superior because I feel like a (dumb), out-of-touch old ass, and tell me what the hell this one is all about?

Read tilde-C as "not C." The tilde represents the bitwise-not operation in the C programming language. In other words, it inverts all the bits in a variable, changing all zeroes to ones and vice versa.

So, one would think that the rally shown is, like with the 2004 "Anyone But Bush" voting strategy, just calling for programming in any language other than C.

However, there's a problem with that. The bitwise-not operator specifies the exact opposite of the referent, and so the rally would actually be calling for programming in a specific language which would be the polar opposite of C. What that might be would be difficult to pin down.

Perhaps what he intended was "!=C" which means "not equal to C," but that doesn't sound like the word "Nazi," and so wouldn't be funny.

More generally, tilde represents the symbolic logic operation "not".

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I think my image is too dumb to deserve very much explanation, but Dave and Ricky got it. I searched logical operator signs to find a "not."

In my mind, these stout fellows like anything but C. (I spared the world 'shopped photos of the Not Cs rounding up people who had C sewn on their coats. Even I questioned the taste of that. You're welcome.)
