Way More Americans May Be Atheists Than We Thought:
...Atheists constitute a culturally significant part of American society.

We’re not sure how significant, though. The number of atheists in the U.S. is still a matter of considerable debate. Recent surveys have found that only about one in 10 Americans report that they do not believe in God, and only about 3 percent
identify as atheist. But a new study suggests that the true number of atheists could be much larger, perhaps even 10 times larger than previously estimated.

I wonder why they are so under-represented. Maybe it's the innate feeling of shame that they can't quite shake...

I hear you saying that you didn't read the article.

don't know how you arrive at that. The article says a lot of things, but one of the jists is there are more atheists than we think. And they are already under represented...so

I arrived at it because the article offers several hypotheses about why atheists are underrepresented.

I've met a lot of atheists who are somewhat reticent about opening up to friends and family, but I have never, to my recollection, met one who seemed the least bit ashamed. Rather, they often want to burst forth with pride at reaching that turning point in their lives, but aren't sure how to go about it. As veterans, I think it's our job to see them through the 'angry atheist' phase that many go through, and channel their energies into positive works and outlook.

This should not be surprising to Christians that actually "share their faith". I have talked to many people over the years that have aid that they go through the motions because of family expectations and have admitted they don't really believe. They don't want to disappoint their mother or father etc. 30% would not surprise me.
