Will it happen within our lifetime ( in 30-70 years)?

By using Elon Musk's Neuralink (Neural Lace 2039???) ,NerveGear, exo-skeletons, OpenWorld VR maybe?

And if we were to achieve this would anyone still want to live in the real world apart from people who are maintaining the system and certain religious groups?(or at least take breaks from full dive VR)

And is VR a replacement for reality? As in will people still want to go out and physically travel?

Sure, we can pump any sounds into your ears, and display intensely realistic images into your eyes, and haptic gear is quite good. But...

We have been promised smell-o-vision for almost 50 years, now. Where is it?

We won't get truly full-immersion VR until they can ensure that the gleaming white pods we will get sealed into don't constantly smell like farts and armpits.

Seriously, even if trying to make a VR rack of ribs smell like an actual rack of ribs weren't a huge problem, the next largest issues that will constantly kick people out of immersion are prioperception (including one's sense of momentum) and temperature.

For the former, full immersion will require that when I slide into home plate inside VR baseball, it actually feels like I'm sliding into home plate (possibly even encountering Ty Cobb's cleats).

For the latter, imagine what it feels like when you open the sauna door and feel the blast of cold winter air. Or can you make the tough guy feel like he's putting out a cigar on his own arm without for real burning him?

Don't get me wrong, there's lots of awesome tech out there, like this racing chair, but there's a loooooooong way to go before there will be more generic full-immersion VR closer to Star Trek's holodeck.

I look forward to quality VR to be able to experience things that would be too expensive, time consuming, or dangerous to do in real life.

So that you have an understanding of the full dive virtual reality , read - https://invisible.toys/full-dive-virtual-reality. I think the possibility of full VR immersion will be here in 20 years.
