I'm offended too.
Red Devils were the worst ecstasy tabs I ever had. Nightmarishly paranoid roll and I was sick for three days. Insenstitive jerks.

I think the group should have called itself "Parents for Mascot Stupidity". Far more appropriate, especially when you consider the acronym.

Well then, let's replace that naughty devil image with something more sophisticated, like the logo for Maserati. (Italian sportscar company.)
http://www.faszination-oldtimer.de/events/maserati-logo.jpg
I have that logo on an old black tee shirt, and was once asked by someone if it is "devil's pitchfork"! Pretty cool. (Actually it's Neptune's trident.)
(Maybe the school could adopt an old rusted Maserati as their mascot. Restoring it would be a great project for autoshop class!) (-:

When I read about the objections of the Navajo Nation, I didn't have the least idea why they might have an objection.
What blatant insensitivity on my part. As soon as I read the details, I could almost hear Maj.-Gen. A. Jackson's Georgian troops say "Let's git them dirty red-devils! Let's send 'em all to Oklahoma or some other bleak wilderness area!"
It's all superstition, I admit, but 8 years in a Catholic school leaves me decidedly queasy about having a devil as a school mascot. Eighteen years in a very religious family as a practicing Catholic--to include a sister who entered the convent as a nun--is too much intellectual "baggage" to discard even over an entire lifetime. (I could, of course, just lie to myself and pretend but....)
I admit a amount of discomfiture with the team-name "Devil Rays". Why not "Manta Rays"? Answer: "Devils" connotes a certain degree of the kind of qualities that might go with "Lions", "Tigers", or "Panthers" (--my own high school's mascot--): Cruelty, ruthlessness, toughness, harshness, etc.--all qualities that are good for winning a football or basketball game. But "devils" additionally connotes evil.
As an example of word-power: One has to wonder how long Lorraine Bobbit [said: "Bob-it"] had to put up with a U.S. Marine's demands to "Let's do it. Now!" before she . . . uhh . . . Bob'ed It. (I'm on the husband's side but surely listening to herself say day after day
"Lorraine Bobbit; Lorraine, bob it; Lorraine, BOB IT!"
had to eventually seep into her basic mentality.

I think it was some sort of Freedom-Fighter/Revolutionary/Rebel/Terrorist or other icon of armed insurrection against authority.
You are right it all makes sense now! And here I thought it had been caused by playing Doom or listening to the wrong music.
The logical solution is to enact a zero-tolerance policy against aggresive or violent school mascots.

I don't know about rainbows. They could be seen as a sort of endorsment of the gay lifestyle. Or alternatley as a symbol with religious conotations of genocide on a global scale.
And the non-violence of kittens can be awfully deceptive. A kitten mascot could also be seen as celebrating the carnivorus and egocentric lifestyle of felines.
I don't even want to go here into the sexual symbolism of daisies.
Are you sure you want to expose the children to that kind of stuff?

I think the mascot should be changed to the, "Cottonmouth Mocassins." (Agkistrodon piscivourus).
Here is an animal that is valuable to it's enviorment and ledgendary for it's ferocity. While most of the fierceness rep is the usual snake BS, it is very sinister-looking and it's undeserved reputation might help discourage the opposing team.
Or perhaps they can hit a compromise and call the mascot something like the, "Lavender Demons," or something else that no one short of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson would take serously.
Kinda' makes me glad that team sports don't do much for me.

Why not a nice parasite for a mascot? Most of these jocks are already parasites anyway. Hold does the Fighting Tape Worms sound?

The answer is right in front of your eyes, people:
The Fighting Ilk.
So what color is an ilk?
My kids still love me. |

Geez, your not very bright are you? You know what an ilk is, those big, brown moose like creatures, with the antlers? I guess I have to explain everything to you ...

I still think the "Fighting Whities" is the best mascot I've ever seen. I believe a high school on a reservation adopted this one....
