The P.W.B. Red 'x' Coordinate Pen advertising is a master work of scientific-sounding mumbo-jumbo. Anyone who truly enjoys physics might want to turn away as I quote from the site:
quote:
We know from our experiments that within the space-time co-ordinates of x, y, z and t, the 'x' co-ordinate, given the correct circumstances, is formed when the senses of a human observer interact with an object. Unfortunately, most modern objects of new type materials will not allow the human senses of the 'observer' to effectively interact to form the vital 'x' of space-time co-ordinates.

P.W.B. devices have been induced with the ability to modify an object to which they are attached so that the human senses can interact and form the vital 'x' co-ordinate. It is necessary to appreciate that the human senses evolved from early life forms when the dominant environment was extremely simple in comparison with the modern environment.
As if there were a fixed set of coordinates in which 'x' always meant the same thing.

What a load of crock in that article. You don't have to read more that a sentence before stumbling onto a misunderstanding/misconception/lie.

I haven't seen any disclaimer yet, but it has to be there somewhere. It can't be for real.

I wish it weren't for real, but they praise Rupert Sheldrake, and other products of theirs have been seriously reviewed in audio magazines over the years. Yes, years. The Belts have been doing this stuff for 15 years, at least.

Of course, homeopaths have been selling lies, misunderstandings and misconceptions for about 200 years now, so it appears that perhaps the Belts are just getting warmed up.

Also from that site:
quote:
A large amount of the contents of our home is constructed from wood. This material is also erroneously considered to be 'natural'. When wood is in the form of a growing tree, the energy pattern is of a living object and the root structure, when embedded in the earth, dominates the energy pattern. Once the tree has been cut and becomes dry timber, the energy pattern is unnatural and incompatible with the human senses. The Quantum Clip has been 'tuned' to wood in the form of timber. Applying the Clip to an object constructed in part, of wood, changes the pattern to one compatible with the human senses.

Hmm. They're also the people selling some goop that you rub on your stereo to make it sound better. Their "electret cream" is another great example of stringing technical terms together without regard for meaning.

Loved the review you cited. Since I make a living doing serious tech work in the pro audio industry, such examples of utter cluelessness make me feel a lot better about my job security- "inter caecos regnat luscus"

Frankly, magazines aimed at hifi buffs tend to be dripping with snake oil, while those aimed at the pro market are just a bit greasy with it.

edited to add: hey, I thought it was a green marker that you were supposed to use to make your CDs sound better.

Excellent, EXCELLENT!!! The best sci-fi / fantasy I've read in a month. Author, stand up and take a bow, sir (wild applause)!

I will never fail to be amazed at how this sort of illogical nonsense can be so readly swallowed by otherwise sensable folks.

I wonder, perhaps it's the technological enviorment even the poorest of us live in. Perhaps we rely upon our machinery too much and expect marvels where none exist. We love the concept of flying electrons fulfilling our most fantastic whims, and the 'possibility' of all of our imaginings being given, whole, into our hands by benevolent science. And all we need is just a few $$ to achieve Nirvana.

Or, more likely, we have, and have always had, and always will have, a Limbaugh-sized addiction to snake oil, and no matter how often nor accuratly it is debunked, we'll still guzzle it by the gallon and beg for more.

And here I always thought that colour of the marker was inconsequential as long as it absorbed the wavelenths that the CD-pickup was transmitting.

A couple of friends and I did a (kind of) double blind test, and did manage to identify discs painted with that marker. The differences were barely detectable though, and in some cases it had a negative effect on the sound.
