Well, seems we have a new orbiter, in an orbit of about 10,500 years around the sun. They'd like to name it Sedna for the Inuit goddess that created the sea creatures of the Arctic. Pretty cool. Bet we can't see it with a telescope either though.

"Three-fourths the size of Pluto" and very "reddish" like Mars. I wonder if its spherical like a little planet, or potato-shaped like a big asteroid? Just wondering. Some folks over at BABB are debating if its a "planet" or a "KBO" - those categories don't bother me much. I just want to know how different it is, having formed so far from the sun. Sedna is a cool name.

If it is reddish like Mars, the ice must be heavily contaminated. I don't think it differs much from other Kuiper Belt objects though.

Edit: If it is just like Kuiper Belt objects, it will probably resemble an ordinary snowball with regards to density, spiked with some amino acids, CO2, methane and ammonia.

From the Denver Post article 03/16/04
quote:
The researchers, whose observations were supported by NASA, said the object, referred to as a planetoid, is extremely frigid (minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit) and peculiarly red, probably more so than any other body in the solar system except Mars. They are not sure why, and also have few ideas about the object's composition. It could be a primordial mix of rock and ice.

Rock and ice. It'd be nice to learn the exact composition. Hopefully they get the time on Hubble. It also said that they were expecting to find more such objects in the next 5 years. Should be an interesting next few years.
