I've been hanging out here for a little while now and I'd just like to say you guys are a fun bunch of no-nonsense, hard-core, "just the facts mam" skeptics. If I ever have any question I'm skeptical about, I feel confident I can post it here and you guys will have at it like a bunch of hungry pirannahs.

It does make it difficult sometimes when you want to talk about something for the fun of it, though. For example, in the for-fun thread I made about 'how do you know you're not demonically possessed' good old Dave W. has to spoil it by showing that the whole damn thing doesn't matter one way or the other. Thanks Dave.

Of course the key is that such nonsense is not what this community is about. And I like that. The world would be a better place if more people were a bit more serious more of the time. And certainly the world would be a better place if more folks in the media business had the integrity to be more skeptical and more honest with the 'news' they report to the public.

Anyway, I was just thinking about how different this place is from other places I post and I thought I'd post my appreciation for the basic nature of this community.

Ah yes, a play on the Hard Core phrase in the thread titel. I'm a little slow this morning, so bear with me.

Okay, command decision: next time, put the thread in "General Discussion" and put "just for fun" somewhere in the message (or something else obvious, like "imagine if you will..."), and I'll do my best to avoid ruining it for everyone. I mean, come on, Cha (can I call you 'Cha'?): the message in question was aimed at the skepticism of skeptics!

On the other hand, I find it "fun" to find situations in which skepticism and critical thinking are worthless. Such as that thread, in which the premises ensure that a person's perceptions themselves are unreliable, and so a person is unable to gather "evidence," unable to know the "truth," and unable to confirm any sort of "conclusion." So, at the very least, I had fun in that thread, even if you didn't.

Personally, I am ashamed of my inability to satisfactorily thank Kil and @tomic for the existence of this web site.

Oh, and as for the term "hardcore," I used to have difficulties explaining to people that I listened to a lot of hardcore punk rock back in the '80s. They looked at me strange and started asking about porn soundtracks. Took me a while to figure that out, as I hadn't - by then - seen any hardcore porn labeled as such. For much of the population, the non-porn use of the term "hardcore" appears to have been replaced by "extreme." "Hardcore" is a perfectly good word, it's a real shame it's got this porn baggage now.

I don't know about @, but I could always use some extra cash... Anyhow, now I'm blushing.

If you need to shorten the name, keep the 'L' in - - - as in Chal or Loobi. 'Cha' sounds like a dance step as in the Cha Cha. I also know a grown woman who refers to the 'private parts' of the female body as a 'cha cha.' Don't ask.

BTW - I enjoyed that thread quite a bit too. Though the response I get from a topic like that here as opposed to elsewhere is dramatically different - one might describe it as hard-core, if one had grown up in the '80s. And that reaction's generally a good, refreshing thing - hence my appreciation for the folks around here.
