Isrealis using secret micro lie detectors on 'suspicious passengers', device can proportedly (cough)

The chip can be inserted in an eyeglass frame and allow screeners to determine with 98 percent accuracy whether a suspicious traveler has intentions to launch an attack during flight, Middle East Newsline reported.

V Entertainment? Whaddafork? As our Mexican friends would say: "Boolchit!"

Even if this boolchit actually worked, I'll bet a good phlemy cold, real of faked, would stop it in it's tracks. And an accent like mine -- southern mushmouth -- would blow the circuts.

Do I yet again hear the exchange of dollars for crap?

Thats not from Futurama is it? There was an episode on last night where Zoidburg (sp???) said, "Wow, 2 for only $16.95, I'm becoming a smart consumer. I'll take 8"

Why don't the Israelis save their cash and just read tea leaves instead?

That's funny! Who would buy them, I wonder?

Try using it on the people who made it....

Right on! Whether it worked or not, we could argue for weeks on whether or not they should be prosecuted for lying. I love it!

Here's a interesting link just Googled up on the so-called 'technology'. It's been around for a while...

Sounds like there are conflicting claims of accuracy. The device uses technology similar to lie detectors which do work but have too high an error rate to be used in court. Perhaps, knowing you are about to kill yourself for god and country allows a higher success rate for a voice stress detection device. While it might have less success testing if your boyfriend is cheating, it might work for flight screening.

There has been some promising research in matching facial expression and other body language with the truthfulness of statements. If they develop a computer program to measure those cues, they might have a better device.

And yet according to major studies, the standard polygraph doesn't do much of anything. All the decisions are made by the polygrapher, after all, and not the machine. Polygraphing is more likely to get a guilty person to confess if he/she believes that polygraphy "works," which indicates that the machine itself does nothing.

It's an expensive and much fancier version of saying "there was ink on the stolen object," and looking for the person who looks at his/her hands. The problem is, with mass polygraphy for hiring and maintaining a job, we've got no a priori evidence that anything had been stolen. The courts don't use polygraphy not because of a high error rate, but because they know the results are no better than hearsay on the part of the polygrapher.

And polygraphy as used by the U.S. government has failed to catch even a single spy. It works no better at determining a person's trustworthiness than interviewing. Yet several government agencies are ignoring the government-sponsored study results and increasing the rate of polygraphic exams of employees. It makes no sense at all.

I know very little about the accuracy of lie detectors other than they are not accurate enough to meet evidence standards. But that doesn't mean they don't work at all. So without claiming to know who is right here, I looked for the research.

From the skeptic's dictionary, it is clear they are totally skeptical. But they cite a lot of analyses and not as much original research.

While the polygraph association has a reason to be biased, they do cite original research.

So I'm not sure what to think.
