I guess the time has come to post this story. The more I read on it, the more hilarious it gets.

So, in the fine, old tradition of dirty windows and grease stains, here it is:

quote:
A half-eaten slice of elderly cheese on toast purportedly showing the image of the Virgin Mary has attracted 100,000 hits on the eBay auction website.
A Florida woman put the sandwich up for sale, saying it has brought her great luck since she found it 10 years ago.

eBay originally withdrew the item, suspecting it might be a joke. But it has now apparently been reassured that the offering is genuine.

The snack has attracted a bid - thought to be a hoax - of $99.9m.

Would you like some fries with that?

What made me laugh the hardest was that she BIT it. She bit the divine Virgin Mary's image. D'you suppose the Catholics have a penance set for that?

Is it just me or does the image look more like Marilyn Monroe (or Madonna) than the Blessed Virgin?

There are dozens of hilarious sendups showing up on Ebay. Go to www.ebay.com and do a search on "cheese sandwich".

The lady is holding up a grilled cheese sandwich and says "I do believe that this is the Virgin Mary Mother Of God".
No it is a freaking cheese sandwich. Does she actually believe Jesus' mom was a cheese sandwich? Of course the sandwich is a virgin.
All kidding aside if that actually is a acurate 'picture' of Mary on the sandwich - I have to think she was a babe.

Here's Joe Nickell's take on it:

quote:
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Brace yourself. There may be a less-than-miraculous explanation for that image of the Virgin Mary a Florida woman says appeared in her grilled cheese sandwich.

Professional skeptic Joe Nickell says it's the same phenomenon that lets people see ships in the clouds, butterflies in ink blots and the man on the moon.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--cheesymiracle-exp1117nov17,0,2110063.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire

Sorta takes a little of the romance away, but skeptics do that sort on thing. I've not heard if she's actually sold it, yet. I wonder; if she'd kept this funky sandwich for so long and it's brought her such good luck over the years, why is she eager to part with it? I'd think she'd keep it and hope to hit the Powerball. Or maybe she plans to on a smaller scale on Ebay......... Yeah, I know. Nasty, paranoid mind.

Mary seems to be a restless, little chippy. Where ever will she turn up next?

The cheese sandwich flapdoodle is improving with age:

Holy grilled cheese tale evokes Swiss
Published November 21, 2004

This is why I live in South Florida.

Because of a story like this, with characters like these and an ending that seems destined for Judge Judy's courtroom, Dr. Phil's rubber room or Jerry Springer's romper room.

Because a tale with more holes than decade-old grilled cheese can take on a life of its own, keep smelling stranger by the minute, and make me feel like a regular Mike Wallace when I get a door closed in my face and a phone hung up on me.

This one is so out there it makes the Raelians look sane.

You remember the Raelians, the space-age cult whose founder was visited by little green men and who got worldwide press with its South Florida announcement that it had cloned a baby.

This week, courtesy of a Dania Beach woman named Diana Duyser, we got the Immaculate Convection.

According to the article, people are actually bidding on this silly thing! And as might be expected, there have been some spin-offs.

The most wonderful thing is that she questions the possibility of someone eating a 10-year-old cheese sandwich... I mean... it must be smelling quite bad now.

People sometimes people are so delusional it's endearing.

Here's what I want to know. How the fuck do you ever know that the Virgin Mary's on your sandwich? I mean, I'm pretty sure I've never seen her besides some depictions on a few Renaisance paintings. (OK, more than a few...) So if I'm extra hungry and start digging into my, say, chicken lo mein, what's going to stop me from biting off Mary's head? Hell, I'm not even sure if I could tell if that splotch on my potato was just a splotch or some famous actor! You think I could sell a pumpkin pie if the crust presented a nice picture of Brad Pitt?

That could sell for a lot of money. Not as much as VM, but quite a lot.

This thing has taken on a life of it's own. You simply can't make this stuff up.

Can't top the $15,100 high bid to buy the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich on eBay? Fret not. An eBay auctioneer is offering the Virgin Mary in Grilled Cheese-Make Your Own Kit and another is selling a Virgin Mary in Grilled Cheese Sandwich Replica. And that's just for starters.

Can I intrest anyone in a Virgin Mary, grilled cheese 'possum patty? Starting bid, $1,000.

And now, the rest of the story.

quote:
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Looks like Diana Duyser's going to get some really nice bread for her eBay item -- $28,000 for a 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich half that she believes bears the image of the Virgin Mary.

The new big cheese -- Steve Baker.

Bidding on the Internet auction house closed Monday night. The winning bidder wasn't disclosed on the Web site, but it was reportedly GoldenPalace.com, an online casino.

I am beginning to think that we as a species, are too stupid to survive. Twenty eight large! Holy rotted milk!

This morning I made a couple of pieces of toast. Rye toast, if you must know. Not seeded. What to my surprise? I could clearly make out a burnt image of Carl Sagan on my toast! Well, it wasn't long before the press started lining up for a look. Then came the usual pack of skeptics, seeing the image as a sign that Dr. Sagan wants us to eat a good breakfast. The Center for Inquiry wants the toast put on permanent display. Offers to bring my toast and myself as guests on various talk shows have come pouring in. Larry King made an offer, but he warned that he would only air the segment if I agreed to allow Pat Robertson present a dissenting view. When told of the Sagan image, Roberstons comment was “of course it's burnt. And what does this tell us about where Sagan is now?”

Anyhow, being a somewhat shy person and not wanting to cash in on what may have been a mere coincidence, I ate the toast. With coffee. It turned out to be the most satisfying breakfast I have ever had…

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
