This is a website that basically is geared up to witness specifically to people contemplating suicide.

To me, that seems like they're looking to provide an "emotional hook" to people, to get them hooked into religion and keep them there.

After all, if jesus is the reason you don't kill yourself, then how likely is it you'd change your mind later?

Don't get me wrong. I'm all FOR preventing suicide; but how pure are the motives of those who set up that site, do you think?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Religion is always offered as a salve to emotionally distraught people, whether they be suicidal, drug addicts, victims of abuse, death row convicts, whatever.

I can see both sides. On the one hand, maybe faith could offer some amount of comfort or hope. On the other, like you said, it could be considered hooking people when they are thinking least clearly.

I guess the real question is false hope better than no hope? In the very few amount of times which I had to choose to give one of these to people, I have always gone with no hope but then double back with false hope. I guess I don't just have to stomach for giving someone no hope. Not enough stomach to be a realist.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I don't know. I guess it depends on the person.
For instance, I'm handicapped, I've been in a wheelchair since forever. Recently, my mother was converted. Well, she took me to church, as all good mothers would. I'm 100% convinced the preachers and other faithful people that were near me were sincere when they prayed for my sake.

Most of these people are very sincere, and to answer the false hope question, yes, it is better to have no hope than false hope.

There is no reason to think that false hope cures any ills, just as there is no reason to think that god stops suicide.

I can't remember where I read this, but I read that many people who join cults recently had a serious emotional trauma (ie rape, breakup, divorce, death in the family, etc.) In other words, they are vulnerable.

How pure are the site owner's motives? If their intent is simply to convert someone to Jesus, then I find the site disgusting and self-interested. If their intent is to prevent a suicide out of compassion for their fellow man, then it's OK with me.

Call me cynical but the last thing I'd want to hear if I were suicidal is Biblical babble.
