Very simple; the sterotype was fostered in Hollywood based on the roles played by such blondes as Mae West, Marlyn Monroe, and Jayne Mansfield, among others. The general public liked it and went along with it, and so, for good or ill, it stuck.
Another aspect of it is a bit more serious -- racism. Many nordic folks are light complected and blond, and the tag of "dumb squarehead" has been passed around for generations, especally in areas where these immigrents settled. Hitler and the Nazis, with their "aryan supremacy" folderol helped matters not at all.

I blame ricky for this one.
A blonde goes into an emergency room, she has a puncture wound in her left hand and a ringing in her ears.
She had become despondent and wanted to kill herself, so she had put a gun to her ear, but knowing how she hated loud noises, she put her other hand over her ear. |
