I'm starting to wonder why they just don't send the corpse off to a good taxidermist and display him forever.
quote:
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Italy prepared missiles and a warship on Wednesday to protect the world's powerful at Pope John Paul's funeral as a ceaseless floodtide of pilgrims waited hours to pay their respects to the Polish pontiff.

Undeterred by the cold, hundreds of thousands of faithful stood packed together in line more than 12 hours overnight to enter St. Peter's Basilica where the Pope's body lay on a simple bier near the grotto where he will be buried on Friday.

They could mount it in the grotto and charge an admission, and perhaps even sell an Indulgence or two for a small, extra fee.

I hear that the pope will return from heaven with super powers to fight evil.

The whole thing is pretty non-Christian IMO. Consider that if you subscribe to Christian mythology, then...

1. The Pope had a soul which is his true, undying essence

2. That soul's in heaven and his corpse is just a discarded husk.

3. So, if you want to get close to the pope, do it with prayer because there's nothing left of his true essence in the world anymore.

What these people are doing is tantamount to worshipping a dead body - worse than idolotry I'd argue. I'm sure god is none-too-pleased with this violation of one of his ten commandments. A million people waiting to commit mortal sin. It's lunacy. Stuff like this is the reason so few people are going to be raptured up.

This came to mind. (For the title, not the content.)

We all knew that Nostradamus would get his moldy tuppence into the mix, didn't we.
quote:

Nostradamus: new Pope assassinated

THE pope elected to succeed John Paul II will be assassinated and his death will spark a Muslim invasion of the west that will split the Catholic Church, according to an interpretation of Nostradamus's prophecies by a leading Colombian author.

"The next pope elected will be subsequently murdered in central Italy. Then comes pope number 112, who will flee Rome because of an attack by Muslims," Gonzalo Echeverri, a Colombian investigating judge and author of a book on Nostradamus said.

According to Echeverri, the pope will base himself in Avignon, France and another pontiff will take control in Italy, splitting the Catholic church in two.

I expect many more nonsense predictions along the same line as things progress.

Isn't it remarkable that these 'seers' only occasionally predict other than disaster? I guess you can't hold an audience with anything else.

From that site:
quote:
Nostradamus - Quatrains
Century 2, Quatrain 41

The great star will burn for seven days,
The cloud will cause two suns to appear:
The big mastiff will howl all night
When the great pontiff will change country.
So is this the Quatrain the Colombian is referring to?

Ahhh...the beauty of Nostradamus. It could be, it could not be. It is, it isn't.
