Filthy, you are a truly tolerant sort. While I strive for that, I fail when it comes to cults.

I like your distinction between tolerate and respect, Kil. I've thought about this subject a lot, trying to figure out why cults bother me so much and why I can't muster the tolerance I maybe should have.

While I think critical thinking is worthy in and of itself (because thinking and learning about anything makes us better), I'm a skekptic in large part because I see the harm that comes from not thinking critically. Obvious examples: flimflammers separating you from your hard-earned money, groupthink, screwing up your body with harmful herbs.

It seems to me that cults often create the ultimate in non-critical thinking (not thinking at ALL) leading to the ultimate harm (abuse, rape, thievery, and death).

If I talked my neighbor out of her life savings, shot her dog, and molested her daughter, wouldn't I be arrested rather quickly? I understand charges are finally filed against Jeffs...but how long has the illegal crap been going on?

By tolerating their religion, we allow them an environment of secrecy, control, oppression and even crime.

The only solution I can think of is education. But the poor people in that cult were born into it; they're isolated from any information that might encourage them to question things.

Sigh.

Up to a point, dear, up to a point. As the father (single) of two daughters and four grand daughters, I would quite cheerfully and with a clear conscience, chop this Jeffs pervert up for crab bait, and the "husband to be" along with him.

You are correct in that education is the answer. Unfortunatly, you are further correct in that it is unlikely to happen.

I have always thought that this polygamy business was/is no more than a cheap excuse to fuck younger women. I have yet to stand corrected on it -- when was the last time one of them 'married' a granny?

Public flogging and the bastinado is too good for the likes of these perverts.
quote:
ST. GEORGE, Utah — Abandoned by his family, faith and community, Gideon Barlow arrived here an orphan from another world.

At first, he played the tough guy, aloof and hard. But when no one was watching, he would cry.

The freckle-faced 17-year-old said he was left to fend for himself last year after being forced out of Colorado City, Ariz., a town about 40 miles east of here, just over the state line.

"I couldn't see how my mom would let them do what they did to me," he said.

When he tried to visit her on Mother's Day, he said, she told him to stay away. When he begged to give her a present, she said she wanted nothing.

"I am dead to her now," he said.

Gideon is one of the "Lost Boys," a group of more than 400 teenagers — some as young as 13 — who authorities in Utah and Arizona say have fled or been driven out of the polygamous enclaves of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City over the last four years.

His stated offenses: wearing short-sleeved shirts, listening to CDs and having a girlfriend. Other boys say they were booted out for going to movies, watching television and staying out past curfew.

Some say they were sometimes given as little as two hours' notice before being driven to St. George or nearby Hurricane, Utah, and left like unwanted pets along the road.

Authorities say the teens aren't really being expelled for what they watch or wear, but rather to reduce competition for women in places where men can have dozens of wives.

In brief, if all you want to keep are the girls, what's to be done with the boys? Why, you shitcan them beside the road, of course.

To be fair, a religious cult.
