I don't get by Something Awful nearly often enough. Photoshop Phriday is definitely my favorite section. Tonight, I discovered last week's Sensational News Stories!, throughout which one must pay attention to the crawl (my favorite).

And for the geeks out there, they recently gave us Rejected Software 2 (favorite).

People here on SFN think I have a lot of time on my hands, but these Photoshopping guys got me beat in the idleness department, hands down.

I personally like AOL SPEL CHEKR fr AIM 5.5

Bad spelling and grammar bothers me. It's really good here, but check out places like Rapture Ready. The general spelling and grammar use is on par with their general education and/or their intelligence. In places like that, even I, who is not a native English speaker, writes better than 90% of the Americans.
That's awful, but comical, in a tragic kind of way.

It's a pet peeve of mine as well, although I'm no longer the grammer nazi I used to be. If they can't write 'em, why should I try to read 'em?

I've always thought that if you have something to say, in order to get the point across as clearly as possible it is necessary to write in such a manner that you are easy to read. To me, sloppy writing is a sign of sloppy thought, and I have little patience with it.

But on a brighter side, they can be trained. I've taken note that many who come here writing like a Bush bicycle ride improve considerably as they go along.

People like Doc and Siberia impress hell out of me. They manage to write at least as well as I, in a language that they have taught themselves. Remarkable, and thus, which should I read: they or some hammer-head that shows no concern as to whether he is coherent or not?

Heh, even the late Latinijarl writes far better than many on other boards.

What's wrong with bad spelling? Sheesh, maybe I should not do chat!!!

Most bad spelling in chat are typos. Also, the statements are relativly short -- no horrible, 500 word, run-on sentences and/or paragraphs.

I don't have all that much of a problem with misspelling (my own is downright creative, sometimes). It's all of the other violations of language that turn a piece of writing into gibberish-requiring-a-translator.

As I'se mentioned before, the only way we can get to know someone on these or any boards is through his/her writing. If you write like an idiot, you will be thought of as an idiot, est il pas aussi?

The only thing really important to me is that the person gets their ideas across clearly. After all, that is really want language is for, no? Spelling and grammar mistakes happen, whether they are typos or just being ignorant of language rules. But it isn't really a problem unless the thought they are trying to pass on gets obstructed.

But people who type entire pages as one paragraph or write all in caps just make it harder to understand their message.

Then again, there are people who compose their entire posts of digits such as "00101000 10100100," but that is another story...

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Hey f, you callin' ne a idiot?

Wellll, that's okay. My wife calls me worse...

There are some things online that really do irritate the pujeebies outta me.

Have you ever wondered why people use the ten thousand word paragraph, and then make it worse by the added use of all caps or the complete lack of capitalization? When they use no punctuation at all, I won't even read it.

But, my real pet peeve is all of these short cuts like using numbers instead of words, and crap like IMHO and BTW. All I've got to say about that is WTF!

I must be getting old. I'm starting to sound like Andy Rooney. I think Ill go home and see if my eyebrows need trimming.

Nah, it stands for, "What the fruitcake."

But the absolute worst is when someone says, "WTF" out loud while speaking. It makes me just want to smack them. Unfortunately (or fortunately for them), mostly females only say that.

Don't trim 'em; wax mini-handlebars into the centers of each. I saw that once. Diabolical looking and really cool.

Yeah, those are some of my big gripes as well. I haven't the faintest idea of what many of those acronyms mean and don't care enough to find out. Same for all caps and run-ons. If they must write in such a manner, I suspect that the post is has not enough substance to warrent the translation that my attention span is too short to provide without pain.

Hmph. I too, must be getting old and crotchety. I'd better get me another bottle of Serutan ('Natures' spelled backward, an elixer very popular amongst us codgers).
