Can't say I have ever heard of the guy before.

Will require some looking into to form an opinion on this one.

From this:

The White House moved rapidly to fill the vacancy announced on July 1 by retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The announcement -- and the day-long speculation that preceded it -- took the spotlight off Karl Rove, the chief White House political advisor besieged by the C.I.A. leak scandal.

Citing an unnamed Republican strategist, The Washington Times reported Tuesday that the White House wanted to divert news coverage from Mr. Rove…

So much for working closely with Congress to find a choice that all parties can agree on.

And, yes, clearly Bush hopes the ensuing congressional brawl over this nominee will deflect attention away the White House. Or I'm sure he at least considers that a nice perk.

The only thing that suprises me about this choice, (other than the fact that I never heard of this guy before) is that Bush didn't choose an ethnic minority or a woman. That takes away the accusations of racism or misogyny against those that oppose the nomination.

Therefore, I think he's going for it. He wants the fight and he wants to placate the RR. He wants the battle to go to social issues ignoring the fact that this guy appears to be pro-business, too. Most of all he wants the battle to drown out criminal investigations and a poorly planned and unwarranted war.

Perhaps, he has wants the 'nucular' option to come back to the Senate floor. That'll gives the press something else to do, besides being mean to him.

I dunno...

quote:
In his defense, Roberts told senators during his 2003 confirmation hearing that he would be guided by legal precedent. “Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land. ... There is nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent.”

Which doesn't mean that he wouldn't change the prescedent if he had the chance...

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. They only need 5 Dems to prevent a filabuster on this guy, and if I heard correctly he recieved a unanimous senate vote for his current job.

But yeah, it definitely takes the media attention off of Rove.

He has only two years total on the bench; the rest of his carerr is mainly being an associate lawyer for this firm or that. Has said that Roe was a bad decision and should be overturned. Is in favor of organized prayer in school.

a little too early to call him a partisian hack, perhaps, but I'm sure we will before long.

But seriously.... If anyone expects W to nominate anyone who is pro-choice, then they are living in a fantasy world.

The reality is that W will never nominate anyone who agrees openly with the Roe v Wade decision. Never.

So it comes down to two things.... either accept one of his nominees, or have one forced upon us by a republican controlled Senate who is willing to destroy the oldest rules and workings of the senate for short-term political gain.

Preserve the right of the minority to filabuster (by just accepting a nominee), or battle it out and take US politics to a new low.

Pretty shitty options, imo.

Some days I hate republicans.

Yeah. There are alot of things I agree with the republicans on, in principle. Atleast, these USED to be planks in the republican platform.

Smaller government.

Protection of privacy.

Emphasis on states rights, rather than emphasis on the federal gov.

That the second ammendment means we can own guns to protect ourselves from the "well regulated militia" that is necessary to the security of a free state, if the need arises.

And several more....

But it seems that no such republicans really exist anymore, they all look like insane religious zealots whos primary goal is the introduction of their theology into law and government.

So really, I hate what passes for republicans these days.

To bad that so many of the people who feel the way I do on some of these issues just HATE democrats to much to leave the GOP.

And that is why I vote independant Dude. I can't vote in primaries, since I don't belong to a party, but I can pick who is more moderate than radical from both parties.

Ok, a friend who's dem calls me a rabid moderate.

They said on All Things Considered that Dubya is playing to the base. When Rehnquist dies or retires he will go for Alberto Gonzales. The RR crew won't be happy with that, however with one in the door they will be reasonably happy.

This way George can have his cake and eat it.

One last masterstroke by Rove methinks.....

This morning on NPR, they played a reporter's question to Scott McClellan yesterday:
Is it true that Karl Rove was the first to leak Roberts' name to the public?
The reply to that?
Next question.
Lots of laughter from the White House press corps.
