Another reason to support welfare money going to social programs for poor neighborhoods: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/study-busts-myth-of-tvs-link-to-childhood-obesity/2005/07/23/1121539189035.html?oneclick=true

Highlights form the article:

"The single biggest factor influencing a child's lack of involvement in sport was having unemployed parents, the study showed.

"This was followed by having parents born in a non-English speaking country, and having low socio-economic status.

"Children were more likely to play sport if they were in a higher socio-economic bracket, if they were involved in cultural activities such as music, singing and drama and if both their parents were employed.

"The amount of time spent watching television or computer games was either not significant or only slightly influenced rates of sporting activity.

"Mr Stratton, who presented the results at the Australian Social Policy Conference last week, said the results suggested family stability might be the key factor that separated active from inactive children."

This article interests me because when Bush cut federal welfare, he cut a lot of money that went to prevention programs for kids, including programs that got the kids engaged in physical after school activities. Lots of people think "federal welfare" is just a check to lazy drug-addicts popping out kids. But in fact, much of it goes toward programs that try to level the playing field between the middle class and the poor. Health can be an advantage toward social mobility, just like education.
