I have but small doubts that Senator Frist "turned his coat," as it were, for mostly political reasons, but turn it he did. And now the whining of the theocrats, pitiful to hear but easy enough to live with, begins:

'We Thought Frist Was One of Us'
Christian scientists and political conservatives are upset with Frist's support for expanded embryonic stem-cell research.

Christian scientists and conservative groups today were "severely disappointed" after Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist announced this morning his support for a bill providing increased funding for embryonic stem-cell research. In a speech before the Senate, the majority leader said, "I believe today—as I believed and stated in 2001, prior to the establishment of current policy—that the federal government should fund embryonic stem-cell research."

"We're very disappointed on this," said Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics policy analyst for Focus on the Family, "primarily because his statement distorts the pro-life position."

Frist told the Senate. "I am pro-life. I believe human life begins at conception. … An embryo is nascent human life." However, Frist also said, "We should federally fund research only on embryonic stem cells derived from blastocysts [a 4-day-old human embryo] leftover from fertility therapy, which will not be implanted or adopted but instead are otherwise destined by the parents with absolute certainty to be discarded and destroyed."

"I don't know how to combine those two statements," said Bob Scheidt, chairman of the ethics commission for the Christian Medical and Dental Association. "We're shocked, because we as Christian physicians thought Frist was one of us.

"We feel this is terrible mistake," Scheidt said. "In our opinion, it is doing evil that good may come."

Cry me a river!

I do not think that this will help Frist further his presidential ambitions -- too little too late, eh? But it does reflect something of a change in the political atmosphere surrounding stem cell research.

If it comes down to it, I look forward to the Doofus' very first veto. I suspect that the political fallout from that might affect the '06 popularity contest, although I am not prepared to say as how.

This is great news indeed!
A step in the right direction.

The only other logically acceptable course would be to ban fertility therapies, since it produces "more living children than can be put in the vomb of their mother, and will consequenty have to be murdered".

I'm sure that too has been discussed be these groups, but could you imagine the backlash to THAT?

Is it? Or is it a political plot to repair his seriously damaged reputation in wake of the Terri Schiavo diagnosis debacle?

I'm thinking the latter for this preening political bird. He wants to be President after Jar Jar Bush and Darth Cheney.

One thought. While Frist may have changed positions based on what most Americans want, and he wants to be president, opportunistic as it may be, I can't really hold it against him, or any politician who changes views based on majority opinion on issues like this one. He will be called a flip flopper if he runs for president. Clinton was called a flip flopper for changing some of his views based on what most Americans wanted at the time. Isn't it, after all, a politician's job to represent the people after all? I am willing to give Frist a pass on this one. If Bush is intent on brownnosing the RR, who do not represent most Americans, with a veto, while his pole numbers are dropping, (44% approval rating as of Friday) he will most assuredly come out of this the worse for wear. I'm with Filthy on this.

Thank you, Dr. Mabuse, for stating what I keep screaming in a trembling fury every time I hear some asshole social conservative on the radio, condemning stem cell research!
