Once again the media demonstrates that they are ignorant with regard to evolution.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8959763/

Harvard is going to fund an abiogenesis project to the tune of $1M a year. Cool.

This ignorant writer jump in and say that Harvard is launching an evolution research project....

It makes me want to slap the writer. Ignorant and uninformed journalism is as damaging as the deliberate deception carried out by the creationist crowd.

It seems that there is no effective way to combat this type of massive stupidity/ignorance, short of launching your own 24/7 cable news network dedicated to news about science.

Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong.

Anyone have a few million dollars to spare? Anyone?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Not trying to defend the media or anything, but sometimes the scientists themselves are the ones who give the media the wrong impression. I remember a story on Quantum Teleportation here in Australia and the researchers themselves said, "yes, one day we could have teleporters like in star trek".

And here is another totally ignorant reporter, who in one sentence gives ID status as a scientific theory and sets it on the same level as ToE.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9002297/

quote:
It is hard to overstate the passions fired by the debate over intelligent design. President Bush recently said that schoolchildren should learn about the theory alongside Darwin's theory of evolution —

The article is really about the paper published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, concerning ID, that the editor just put in without proper any peer review, and the backlash it generated, and some background on the then editor.

For those who aren't aware.... the Procedings (a small journal, but formerly one with an impeccable record) published an article by Stephen C. Meyer wich claimed that the cambrian explosion could not be accounted for by the ToE, and that the only thing that could account for it was some designer.

PZ Meyers recently posted a good overview of the cambrian on his site.. with some commentary on how ID and other creationists fail to comprehend the immense spans of time associated with geological time frames.
http://pharyngula.org/index/weblog/comments/the_cambrian_as_an_evolutionary_exemplar/

I reccomend reading it.

I've actually heard the newscasters on MSNBC and CNN 'correct' scientists when they attempt to say that ID isn't a 'theory'.

The other day, at some random time I heard:

"Now, we all know that a theory is just a theory. It is trying to tell someone they don't have the right to a theory, or opinion, that keeps getting scientists into trouble. Isn't that right Reverend Billy Bob?"

It's just sickening...

Haven't heard anything new about that channel in a while... figured it was going nowhere.
