To medieval observers, they were mysterious harbingers of doom, but thanks to an unprecedented act of celestial vandalism, scientists have unveiled some of the innermost secrets of comets.
Out is the long-held view of hardened, dirty snowballs hurtling through space. In is the comet as a fluffy ball of powder, blowing puffs of dust whenever sunlight falls on it.
The insight came yesterday when researchers announced the first detailed results of Deep Impact, an elaborate experiment played out in space on July 4. Under the gaze of cameras on nearby spacecraft and more than 70 ground-based telescopes, the Deep Impact probe fired a metre-long copper bullet on a collision course with a 4-mile-wide block of dust and ice known as Comet 9P/Tempel 1.
I await the now-standard and utterly unsupported denials that it was all a put-on by NASA, and is not at all possible because there is no such thing as copper.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this event observed by numerous, amature astronomers?

You are saying, as often, only a lot of craps.

Your assumption that they were seperate things is complete crap. The cork, graphite, and plastic were mixed together under heat until they formed a molecular bond. It was this alloy which had the properties to ensure that Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins were undamaged by re-entry.

The moment I saw bigmouth's image, I knew something was wrong. You see, the aspect ratio is wrong for a 70mm Hasselblad photo, which are square. The image had to be either a crop or a composite.
It turns out that it is the latter. The image can be found here with this description (on the image library Apollo 11 page):

Now if you look at all these pictures you will see that the Sun does not appear in any of them.
The image of the Sun has been taken from another, unspecified photo and inserted into the image by the compositor at a location of his choosing, not necessarily where it would appear in a single photo taken from that point.
Therefore any attempt to do vanishing point analysis on the shadows with the expectation that the shadow lines will converge on the sun is completely invalid.
edit: in fact, any expectation that a line drawn between a shadow and it's source should pass through the Sun in the image is invalid.

Who doesn't know the difference between a composite picture made to look cool and genuine photo documentation.

I thought it was fishy that this image was hosted by bigbrain and no independent link was posted by him...plus the sun in that photo looked odd.
Edited to add: I await with breathless anticipation the reply by bigbrain. Will he retract his statements? Will he completely gloss over and move to something else? Film at 11! |
