The sky isn't falling... yet.

From the article:
quote:
However Larke is optimistic more bird testing will rule out the presence of avian influenza in Canadian birds.

"This H5, is not likely to turn out to be the H5N1 strain that has been circulating in South-east Asia," he says.

Larke says even if migratory birds in Canada are found to have the H5N1 virus, it doesn't necessarily mean they are closely linked to the viruses behind the Asian outbreaks.

Corriveau says it is unlikely anyone in the North will catch the bird flu from hunting ducks or other wild birds.

He says hunters should wash their hands after handling their catches.

If I knew then what I know now then I would know more now than I know.

Don't get too excited about these reports until there is a reason. There is a lot of bird flu out there and always has been. What concerns me is only that it will take "10 days" to identify the H number. That doesn't give one much confidence in a rapid detection system.

This is only of concern if you duck hunt. I'd take care slaughtering those birds anyway since we don't know when the H5N1 will get here. The other concern is if you have ducks or chickens. It's time to move them indoors if possible. If not, then again, use care slaughtering them if you want to eat them. Wash carefully if you just harvest eggs.
