| I wouldn't worry a whole lot about making counter arguments. If this guy goes true to form, he'll go to another question as soon as he feels the slightest heat.
You're not going to beat him, so I think it is best to ask your question in such a way that you get the rest of the audienc to think about it. I doubt if you'll get more than one, so make it a good'ern.

| quote:The number-one thing to do is tell us what this creationist's name is, so that people can dig up old talks he/she has given to see just what the topics of discussion will likely be. Questions should be specifically tailored to those subjects that this specific creationist avoids, and when you ask and he/she fails to answer, you should stubbornly say "you didn't answer my question, which was..." People in the audience who aren't already fully behind the speaker will begin to laugh and/or heckle along with you. If the arguments presented are as scientifically vacuous as we (obviously) expect them to be, then there is no reason to not humiliate this person as a self-important fraud.Originally posted by Ricky

On November 17th, there will be a Creationist giving a presentation at my college (Virginia Tech). I plan on attending, as there will be a q/a period afterwards.

Secondly, it is important to find out who is funding this presentation at a state-run college, and (if appropriate) file First-Amendment complaints with the school and/or Virginia ACLU.

| The CCR5 deletion (a single mutation in humans) provides resistance to HIV infection and as far as I know has no negative impact on one's health otherwise.
Mostly I find a total lack of understanding in these genetic naysayers about how the genome is organized. If you substitute a rabbit gene that produces a rabbit eye into a fruit fly you have removed the eye growth gene from, you get a fruit fly eye just the same.

Manipulating genes in insects can get you antenna where legs go and vice versa. You don't get a failure of the limb to grow, you just get a limb with different features.

The way our genome has evolved allows single mutations to give you things like 6 fingers and 6 toes rather than a failed hand or foot. How do the IDers explain that?

The last CSPAN debate I watched, the IDer claimed RNA wasn't stable enough in nature to have been the original molecule that started things off. The evolutioner didn't say much in rebuttal but actually there is a whole body of work in this field by a guy named Joyce at the Scripps Institute. You should come armed with some of that work in hand. It seems the RNA argument is being substituted for the irreducible complexity argument that is clearly failing to hold up to closer scrutiny.
