I'm fairly sure that I've read in a biology textbook once upon a time about the existence of cyclops (someone/thing that only has one eye). This news item made me wonder if this really happens or if it's a hoax. I can see how this could happen (a mutation makes the bilateral unilateral).I did a quick search of the literature, but found nothing on the subject. Does anyone have any info?

Please note the EYE of that kitten....

Personally, I have never seen a kitten with open eyes before they are a week or more old.

I had heard of this cyclops kitten and was actually looking for more information on it when I stumbled across an article about evolution in cats. I opened this thread over in our Creation/Evolution forum.

And I haven't done any checking into the authenticity of the cyclops kitty, but I have seen that photo. You're right, Dude, it does look a bit manufactured.

I agree.

As for the origin of the mythological cyclops, I have heard it surmised that the Greeks may have found an elephant skull and mistook the opening for the trunk as being a single eye socket.

The site Human Descent first came to mind with all its Photoshop manipulations.

Then, what the heck...I ran 'cyclops' at Snopes....

Ok, generally Snopes is fairly accurate on this stuff.

If it was indeed born with no eyelid... then my argument is more or less moot.

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought this was true. Well, live and learn.

That is a helluva deformity.

I imagine that back in the salad days as it were if a human baby were born with this condition it would have been summarily executed for any number of reasons.

Try a Google image search on some of those deformity terms from that site. Strange, strange.

I've got a book with human baby deformities too. They run in a similar range.

Well, if that freaked you out that much, I won't even post a link to the cyclops images I found on a human pathology site.

I dunno; I've always had a problem with this. the greeks were pretty fair anatomists and surely knew the holes in skulls of all sorts. And while I've read nothing on it, they and other cultures of the times were experienced seafarers and concievably familiar with pacyderms.

I think that they, like all of us, simply invented monsters.

I would think that maybe a human baby was born with this condition and word spread until the Cyclops was invented.
