George W. Bush and his administration are systematically removing your ability to know what's going on in your government. Although we've known for years that they aren't forthcoming with the details surrounding most of their actions, they're also hastily reclassifying previously declassified documents. The less truth we have available, the easier it is for them to pile on more lies. The suppression of information is a greater threat to maintaining any democracy than any potential terrorist activity could ever be.quote Yahoo! News: US Removing Documents from Public Access
U.S. intelligence agencies have been secretly removing from public access at the National Archives thousands of historical documents that were available for years, The New York Times reported on Monday.
[...]
The secret program accelerated after the Bush administration took office and especially after the September 11 attacks, according to archives records, the paper said.
[...]
Critics say it is part of a marked trend toward greater secrecy under the Bush administration, which has increased the pace of classifying documents, slowed declassification and discouraged the release of some material under the Freedom of Information Act, the paper said.

What I find peculiar is that nobody's even hinted generally (in that article, at least) at what kind of documents are being classified. Military service records? Census data? Pre-911 terrorism assessments? Nuclear bomb triggering systems? Election shenanigans? Nerve gas formulae? One needs to know, in order to have a useful opinion.
I don't need to know how to make a WMD, but sure I don't want purely political information suppressed, especially if it might highlight Administration failures, lies, or dirty tricks.

From the buzz i've heard, seems the CIA has had a heavy hand in the selection 'process.' How much do we pay for our 'intelligence services' now anyway? Seems they are very interested in re-classifing as much information on their FU's as possible. Didn't happen, not our fault.., what is "conflict of interest," again? |
