I'd like to tell you a little story from my younger days.

It started Christmas -81 when I was promised a vacation trip to Florida if I managed to save up enough pocket-money 'till the summer of -82. It looked a bit dicey for a while but I made it. I was supposed to travel with friends of our family who was going to visit relatives "over there". But their schedule was changed and they went in the middle of April, just after my 13th birthday. I couldn't go because of school, but my parents fixed a charter trip after the semester.

While in Florida we visited Kennedy Space Center. Lots of cool stuff to see there for a kid like me, who's been interested in Astronomy and science fiction all his life.
One of the things I bought in the gift shop that I thought was utterly cool was a silver pendant of the Space Shuttle to hang around the neck. I fell in love with it the instant I saw it, and I wore it everywhere. I've never seen anyone else wearing one, which I thought added to the cool factor. It was sort of one-of-a-kind.

However, it was stolen a few years later. Many times have I thought about it and wondered what happened to it. I really missed it, because it was such a personal item. It elegantly expressed some of my main interests: Science, technology/engineering, and space.
I must have told my girlfriend about the lost shuttle at least a few times, and she agreed that it was fitting.

Today I got a gift from my girlfriend for my birthday.
A small box. Within it was an item that put a lump in my throat and brought a tear to my eyes:

Dr. Mabuse - "When the going gets tough, the tough get Duct-tape..."
Dr. Mabuse whisper.mp3

That's cool Dr. Mabuse; and this time in gold!

My mom made me go to Kennedy Space Center one year when we were on Spring Break. I was about fourteen, and very pissed to be taken away from the sun and sand for the day... until we got there. It's one of the many things she still gloats that she was right about. I have to admit, she was.

Happy birthday, Dr. Mabuse! I'm glad your story has a happy ending.
