Seems there is a parking problem in DC.

Church-Goers Claim Right To Double-Park

POSTED: 3:36 pm EDT April 24, 2006

WASHINGTON -- In the nation's capital, where parking is scarce, churchgoers say plans to crack down on double-parking infringe on their religious rights.

Worshipers held a rally Sunday afternoon urging officials to let them continue a practice that has long been overlooked.

The D.C. Department of Transportation was planning to hand out warning tickets this weekend and real tickets starting in July, but officials now say they'll review the enforcement program.

Cars have commonly been double-parked near DC churches on Sundays for decades, but police had largely ignored the practice until neighbors complained.

At the rally, the church-goers blamed new high-rise developments.

I'm confused about two things.

1.) Why do they need to double park anyway?
2.) What the hell does double parking have to do with practicing Christianity?

They can't pratice their religion if they can't get to church, they can't get to church without driving. Oh, and I guess they're above public transportation...

If people just double park church spaces, I see no problem with it. But it sounds like that they aren't just doing it to church spaces.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Not living in DC, I can't really talk about the parking situation, but from the article it sounds as if it's fairly limited. If they all come and go at the same time (when mass starts and ends), then it's really no problem.

The parking situation in much of DC is only slightly less abominable than in NYC. I would think that these people are blocking in residents of apartment buildings nearby, who might be trying to get to their own services.

Solution: shut down all of the churches.
