I received the following email and wanted to make sure someone knew your members' email addresses are being used for this purpose. I would prefer not to receive this kind of solicitation but our email address is a required field on our profiles. Is there a way to block members at large from accessing it?

I'll ask, but a positive part of this is that they don't actually get the e-mail address. This is the first instance I have seen of this kind of abuse in the 5+ years I have been here. (Yes, I got one, too. That user has been banned. This is a new one. The admins of this site will be taking steps to prevent this in the future.)

In the upper-right corner of each page, while you are logged on, you should see a line which starts "Personalize:" and right next to that, a link to your own profile. Once you've accessed your profile, directly under your required email address, you will see "Allow Forum Members to Send you E-Mail?" Set that to "No" and the only people who'll be able to send you email here are the Admins (like me and Kil).
Well, anyone you give your email address to will be able to send you email also, of course. |
