Some mammoths had the gene for red or blond hair, according to this article:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wow! Talk about a blond bombshell.

It turns out mammoths may have come in various hair colors, perhaps even red and blond, new research indicates.

Researchers led by Holger Roempler of the University of Leipzig in Germany were able to extract DNA from a 43,000-year-old mammoth bone from Siberia.

They report in Friday's issue of the journal Science said that the mammoth DNA included the gene Mc1r.

HalfMooner - Before clicking on your post you had me hoping my fantasy of being coddled by a gigantic blonde Amazon were to be fulfilled. But it's an interesting article anyway.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

So sorry, Chip! But for your fantasy article, the title would have been "Some blonds are mammoths."

Chip, you are forgetting Futurama's women of the planet Amazonia. It ain't all it's cracked up to be.... But what a way to suicide, eh?

*shrug* Why not blond mammoths? A species' color often varies with it's local -- red & grey foxes come to mind and it is very common in reptiles and fish. I see little reason to doubt that thus it has been for as long as there have been species.

Intresting article, though.
