Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, once a Democratic running mate in Al Gore's presidential bid, and a staunch supporter of the Iraq war, has conceded to his primary opponent, anti-war political newcomer, Ned Lamont. Lamont is beating Lieberman by about four points. But Joe isn't giving up so easily. He promises to run for his present Senate seat in November as an Independent.
I've personally wondered for some time what kind of Democrat Lieberman was. Now it appears he's not one at all.
Meanwhile, Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney was also ousted in her Democratic primary. After her physical confrontation with Capitol security guards, McKinney was called "an embarrassment" by her Democratic challenger. Apparently, her Democratic constituents agreed with the primary's winner, Hank Johnson.

It is a demonstration of the power of the "wedge issue", if we needed another one to convince us of the power they have.
Liberman has a long record of being solidly on the political left, and his attempt to not end up like Hillary is now (on the war issue) or even worse, like Kerry in 2004 (FLIPITYFLIPFLOP!), Liberman sacrificed his credibility with his base. Lamont kicked his ass on one single issue. Iraq.
It would be simplicity itself to reverse your stand on teh Iraq war and blame Bush at the same time.
"Yes, I voted for the Iraq war. I realise now that it was an error to trust the president with that power."
You have a media worthy 6 second sound bite, you don't look wish-washy, and you keep your base voters from being split by a wedge.
The democrats should hire me for spin-control.

Or, after a few moments of reflection on cadence, semantics, and order:
I voted for the war on terrorism. But my trust in the President to competently manage the war was obviously misplaced.
Damn, I think I should email that to the DNC.

Now the dems are garunteed to lose the seat, with the Nader Effect. |

I had the same thought. If Lieberman really cared about ending Republican control of congress, he would support Lamont. This is not a good time to loose any seats there. |

YO: The latest off the Liebermann loss last night is this early Rovian spin:
...that the Dems lost last night because it will split the party. Bullshit! Why the hell does anybody think that Bill Clinton and, the Dems most liberal senator, Barbara Boxer campaigned for Liebermann? So they can go back to Connecticut NOW...and campaign for Lamont. Which is exactly what they're gonna do.
And....just THIS In... New poll today says "only" 60% of those Americans surveyed are against our Iraqi occupation.
Sure has taken SOME people a long time and lots of lives to realize just how injurious President Cheney and his monkey are to the future of the U-S. Look out! Randi Rhodes will be on Larry King this evening. Whoops!

On CNN, crazy rightist Bay Buchanan today portrayed Lieberman's defeat, and the upcoming battle between him and victor Ned Lamont as a "battle for the soul" of the Democratic Party between moderates and radical leftists. The same old drumbeat, despite that 60% Iraq war opposition by the American public in general. Some radicals, this overwhelming majority!
On an interesting side note, Buchanan mentioned that the Republicans were "not in play" in the November Connecticut senate seat contest, and that the race would be between Lieberman and Lamont.
