Clark Kent (yes) Ervin, the first Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security, gave a talk in June of this year before the World Affairs Council. In his speech, Ervin details many of the deficiencies of DHS. In deceptively soothing tones, in effect tears the Department a new cloaca.

Ervin's speech is about half an hour long, with another half hour of question-and-answer. Ervin, a self-described conservative Republican hailing from Houston, advocates throwing a lot more and better people into the defense of the USA homeland. His knowledge is deep and wide on the subject, and he has some startling comments to make. In the light of recent events, I recommend hearing Ervin out. I told my daughter, who sent me the link to the speech, that I hope Al Gore reads Ervin's book, Open Target: Where America is Vulnerable to Attack. I intend to.
