Some of these are probably old news to most of the SFN, but they are still worth a look.

Numbers 3 and 4 are particularly noteworthy

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. / You can send a kid to college but you can't make him think." - B.B. King

History is made by stupid people - The Arrogant Worms

"The greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism." - William Osler

"Religion is the natural home of the psychopath" - Pat Condell

"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter" - Thomas Jefferson

Fascinating stuff! From the sublime to the ridiculous, from humorous to politically charged deception. I recently saw one altered photo showing the skyline of a bombed city in Lebanon, which had been digitally altered to increase the amount of smoke, apparently for the purpose of adding to the photograph's dramatic effect and market value, or possibly for propaganda reasons.

The Lebanese photog was fired by the news agency (Reuters?) when the deception was discovered, and the agency's editorial policy was changed to help prevent further such releases. In that photo, there were obvious repeating elements in the added smoke, and the contrast was also increased to emphasize the smoke. As someone who has played this way (though somewhat more innocently) with Photoshop, I recognized the crude fakery at a glance. Ditto with the repeated soldier groups in the Bush bunch's photo release. The "Kerry-Fonda" collage was a better job of fakery, though even more outrageous politically.

I even had heard of a few others in the Soviet space program.

Colonel Ivan Istochnikov - died in space aboard Soyuz 2. Airbrushed out of photos because the government didn't want to admit two failures with fatalaties in a row.

Grigoriy Nelyubov - dropped from program for fighting at a railroad station. Removed from photos because Soviet Cosmonauts were supposed to be morally superior.

Ivan Anikeyev and Valentin Filatyev - likewise dropped. Were part of the mele that Nelyubov was in with soldiers at a train station.

Valentin Bondarenko - died during O2 pressurization test.

Anatoliy Kartashov - removed from program, medical. bleeding through skin in centrifuge.

Valentin Varlamov - removed from program, medical. Injured neck.

Mars Rafikov - resigned from program. Personal reasons.

Dmitriy Zaikin - removed from program, medical. Ulcers.

Nikitin (first name unknown) - parachute instructor, died in jump accident.

Sources: Varied, but the majority from "Uncovering Soviet Disasters" by James Oberg.

Wow, you can't trust anything you see anymore. And after a scandal or two like the OJ picture, you'd think a change would have occurred. Apparently it's like the government, the only lesson they learned from the Vietnam war was not to let the pictures reach American TV.
