This from George Bush's rant against those Republicans (Mcain, Powell, Warner etc) whose moral compasses have not been completely demagnetized.

Speaking about Colin Powell's objections to torturing terrorism suspects into telling what the suspects think the interrogators want to hear.
quote:
Bush bristled at the criticism from his former top diplomat yesterday, calling it "flawed logic" and accusing Powell of equating U.S. tactics with those of terrorists, even though Powell's letter made no such comparison. "It's unacceptable to think that there's any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children," Bush said.

The effect was rather hilarious or perhaps sinster since there was a long pause after "It's unacceptable to think" - perhaps his true colours are showing through. This has to be heard to be believed.

Please correct me if my interpretation is off:

War-crimes are tried in the ICJ which we are not a party to. Therefore, the worry about the commanders being called up on war-crimes is moot.

Although not a fan of "humane war" or anything approaching it, prisoners are no longer a threat, and need to be re-humanized.

Peace

Not entirely correct.

The Geneva Conventions are US federal law, as are all ratified treaties.

You break them, as a US citizen, and you are in violation of federal law, with all the consequences.

The laws of land warfare, IIRC, are a part of that package as well.

I was under the impression this recent court case spurred some of this action.

Bush Fears War Crimes Prosecution and Impeachment
quote:
He was referring to Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, in which the high court recently held that Bush's military commissions did not comply with the law. Bush sought to try prisoners in commissions they could not attend with evidence they never see, including hearsay and evidence obtained by coercion.

The Court also determined that Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions applies to al Qaeda detainees. That provision of Geneva prohibits "outrages upon personal dignity" and "humiliating and degrading treatment."

Bush called on Congress to define these "vague and undefined" terms in Common Article 3 because "our military and intelligence personnel" involved in capture and interrogation "could now be at risk of prosecution under the War Crimes Act."

Wouldn't it be nice?

The Geneva Convention of 1946 is codified in both the laws of the US and in the UCMJ. So are the other treaties concerning the treatment of prisoners of war/foreign criminal detainees.

The commanders have a serious problem and so do the intelligence operatives. That he acknowledges that they face the threat of war crimes prosecution is downright frightening.

What was also frightening was Bush being almots incoherent with rage - he appears to be more and more insane.

Olberman comments on Bush's little tantrum.

Olberman, once again, speaks with clarity on the issue.

I am glad somebody picked up the It's unacceptable to think... remark. I hope this shows up on You Tube soon.
