(YO!) ...Matt was sure to publish this information on his site; and since it's got the title is has, it seems like this might be a place to put it up, so my skeptical colleagues can shoot it down with their very own perspicacity.

Senator James Inhofe doesn't even know how to spell the word "skeptic."

Remembering that Al Gore is not a scientist and doesn't pretend to be one, and that Inhofe himself is slightly less scientifically literate than a studious chimpanzee, and that, further, he is tight with the energy companies, what more might you expect than someone who takes on Gore and the media but not the science? And like creationists, he quotes the few scientists who disagree. I wonder how many of those last are named, "Steve?"

It is a sad commentary on the voters of OK that they keep sending this cretin back to Washington. Could it be that they just want to get him out of Oklahoma and keep him out as long as possible?

Oh well; we're rid of that fucking Pombo, at least.....

Are you sure this isn't something funny from "The Onion"? If not, its totally nuts. For example in the article, Senator Inhofe is quoted as saying:

"The American people are fed up with media for promoting the idea that former Vice President Al Gore represents the scientific consensus that SUV's and the modern American way of life have somehow created a 'climate emergency' that only United Nations bureaucrats and wealthy Hollywood liberals can solve."

1. The "American People" ploy? The "American People" seem pretty open to the possibility that global warming, whatever its origin, is real.
2. The overall "media" he hates hasn't reported on global warming much recently.
3. The American "media" these days is hardly "liberal". (Unfortunately, since "liberal" would imply being more open-minded.)
4. He mentions "United Nations bureaucrats and wealthy Hollywood liberals". A statement beyond nuts. Just stupid.
5. I don't recall former Vice President Al Gore stating that global warming was "caused by SUVs and the American way of life" nor that those two reasons are the core of scientific "consensus". (That accusation is just plain nuts.)

This is the same Senator Inhofe who said he was "outraged by the outrage" over the abuses in Abu Ghraib.

If anytrhing, the American People are getting fed up with radical rightwing loonies. Senator Inhofe does not speak for the American People.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

Friend Chip, The Onion wishes it could come up with something like Inhofe! Every now and then, you read the statement: "You can't make this stuff up..." Well, that's him -- one of the more radical, conservative demogogues that you really can't imagine until you actually encounter one.

He's lost his committee chair and, one hopes, with luck, he'll be shitcanned in '08. Or was the bastard just reelected? I've lost track....

What really bothers me is the increasing use of the term, "skeptic" by so many special interests and ideologues who have no right to the term.

This theft of "skepticism" is becoming a serious threat.

I think it's time some prominent real skeptics very publicly addressed this issue, defining skepticism and distancing it from right-wing (or indeed, any) propaganda. Otherwise, we are the ones who will be tarred in the public's mind by these lying, fake "skeptics." Skepticism is not historical revisionism, it's not pseudoscience, it's not belief in unevidenced conspiracy theories. And it's certainly not a rejection of overwhelming scientific evidence of global climate change.

Don't let the bastards steal our title -- we earned it, they didn't!

Using the term skeptic is a Carl Rove manuever, HM. The Discovery Institute may have initiated the idea or built their strategies at least, on the idea of if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

So together you get a concerted effort to claim it is you who are the real skeptics and the skeptics are not really skeptical at all.
