Famed actor/director escapes traitorous guides, angry natives

Veracruz, Mexico, December 13, 2006 (HP) -- Director Mel Gibson had just completed filming additional location scenes for his epic movie, Apocalypto, and was drinking tequila in a local cantina. Two drinking companions told Gibson about a "golden idol" secreted within a hidden native Mayan temple nearby.

Gibson related, "I was feeling very relaxed and adventurous. So I told them, 'Hey, we're way over-budget. What the Hell, let's get this thing.'"

Mel Gibson makes off with golden idol.

Gibson managed to avoid elaborate mechanical traps, as well as the betrayal of his guides, and retrieved the idol. He later described the idol as "An ugly, Satanic thing, probably made by the damned Jews and traded to the Mayans by way of the Aryans of Atlantis. The local savages certainly didn't make it."

After escaping the temple, Gibson was chased by local Mayans, but managed to climb aboard his float plane and took off just in time. The Mayans later told reporters they were angry about the low pay they had been given for acting in Apocalypto.
