You tried to put the government back into a good light, and your predecssors blew it. You tried to get a bad economy back on track, and that was blown too......

You gave us Chevy Chase.

You lost your reelection for doing something few liked, but in hindsight was probably yhe right thing to do.

I hoped you willed your principals and character to the future POTUSs.

Rest in Peace

Joe

He'll always be remembered by me for the great one-liner he got off in 1974 when someone criticized (then) candidate Reagan for dying his hair to look younger. I paraphrase....

"Ronnie doesn't dye his hair, he's just prematurely orange."

A moderate in most views, a good mechanic and floor leader, a guy who tried to do what was right at the time, and unjustly (unlike Dubya) painted as a dummy. He should've never been President, and without the extraordinary circumstances of that era, never would have been and likely would have never even tried.

Imagine if the web was available in 1972 to '76? The conspiracy theorists would have had a field day! Spiggy forced to resign for taking chump change bribes, Nixon quitting rather than being impeached, party functionary becomes POTUS, his selected old-line Veep dies in the saddle.... Must have been black helicopters and The Illuminati! In retrospect, one of the wildest political eras in US history.

I rather liked a one-liner I heard from him for the first time only yesterday, in one of NPR's retrospectives:
I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln.
And he had a great appearance on the Simpsons.

And let's not forget the two assassination attempts carried out on him during his term.

Chuckie Manson wanted him dead.

Squeaky and the other bimbo paid the price.
