The original post on this game was archived, otherwise I would have posted there.

From the article:
This curious game won't be on the market until the summer of 2007...
Dammit, another delay!

I believe the developers have the beta code for the game being subjected to a random modification-recompilation cycle, where those versions that get the least compilation errors/warnings are used as the seeds for the next iteration.

The next major release could be a while !

Ahh me. Something else to eat my brain. I am glad that this is not coming out for a while, for I fear that would never see any of you again...

I'd like to see a game where the competition gets beyond killing something with a weapon. This game has potential to break the first person shooter barrier.

What do you mean? There are plenty of non FPS games out there, and many games where killing is not the goal. And its not even first person. So I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

First-person shooters are a relatively new phenomenon, starting with (I think) Castle Wolfenstein 3D back in the early 1990s.

Both before then and afterwards, there have been tons of non-shooters (and non-first-person) games that have been popular, including Incunabula, Theme Park (or Roller Coaster Tycoon), Sim City (especially), and even Tetris.

My biggest worry about Spore is that I'll have to upgrade my computer in order to play it. My current PC doesn't have enough horsepower to play the latest Doom for more than about 15 seconds at the lowest resolution settings.

And don't forget sports games. Today's Madden Football or Tiger Woods Golf all owe a bit of their heritage to the granddaddy of them all: Pong.
