Megan, you can believe anything you want and call yourself anything you want. I'd say most people would consider Satan a deity and hell a supernatural realm, so if you were to believe in those things you'd have a difficult time convincing others of your atheism. I tend to split hairs. I think atheism is better defined as non-belief of any deity (any supernatural being). The word 'god' most often refers to anything worshipped as a creator and 'God' is an alleged specific creator (in reality, the word 'God' has not been defined to mean anything, it is merely a short way to say, "concept that includes as its attributes the act of having created the universe along with eternal, immaterial and timeless but which has no material referent"). Technically, one can disbelieve in the existence of a god but still believe in supernatural beings. I would not call these people atheists.

I pretty much agree with most of you. I am an independent leaning slightly right. I grew up in a strong latin catholic family and attended catholic school my entire life. In college I started thinking and just made the leap.
Anyways, I understand why you ask. I used to visit atheist message boards and chatroom more often but got quickly turned off by far left liberals. As others here mentioned atheist shouldn't be the label it is throwing you off the deep left. Hopefully, the understand of atheists will increase in this country but I doubt. I want to be a moderate close to center republican but that doesn't seem to exist in this country at the moment. :)

Welcome to this board, and don't worry, thorionthei, there are plenty of right-wing atheists here (if you haven't noticed). |

The common cause of disconnect between atheism and right-wing politics, at least in this country, is the right's publicly close political relationship with the church and its subsequent attempts to bestow government favoritism on religious individuals and groups. There's no taboo per se that prevents atheists from holding right-leaning opinions - much of the vitriol is directed at the Republican Party rather than the ideology as a whole.

Yeah, when you start talking about right/left/conservative/liberal you lose me anyway. Republicans are the radical right wing, and Democrats are the more conservative radical right wing. |

It is of course well known that the majority of college professors tend to vote Democratic and espouse liberal political attitudes, especially those in the humanities...interesting |

I tend to view with suspicion things that are 'well known'. Has there ever been, to your knowledge, any kind of serious anthropological study to confirm that "the majority of college professors tend to vote democratic and espouse liberal political attitudes"? I'm not saying you're wrong in this, I would just like to have something a bit more concrete than "of course it is well known". |

Yeah, okay... . I'm sure you can find it in the sociology journals. I was basing my assertion on an interview with Richard Rorty I read recently.
I agree, the "well known" phrase is overused...bad Orpheus...bad Orpheus... |
