Shrub,

1 recipe of many.

1 fifth of Rum
1 cup of Brown sugar
6 fresh lemons squeezed, keep the squoze fruit.
mix, let sit for a week in the fridge, strain. To serve you mix the shrub with cold water to taste. It is an old recipe, and was popular in the US in the 1700's. You can use any fruit you care such as blackberries, and so on.

Light or dark rum? Ed and I vacation in the Carib, so we have lots of both. Any specific fruit you'd recommend?

No, not a sailor, and not old enough for Nam. But, avast ye, I'll split ye from crown to crotch if you touch me shrub!!

Lisa, I would do the lemon as it is the only one I have had, and the recipe can be adjusted to taste, though it should be strong so you can cut it with water. Any rum will do, but if you use screech or dark rums you can cut down on the brown sugar.(screech is a sort of rum they drink in Newfoundland, its the dregs of the rum barrels and it will produce a screech when you take a shot.)

If you have some fine caribbean rums, don't adulterate it with anything but ice cubes.

Zombies?

They're delicious -- but powerful. I have not had one in many, many years. However, I always will remember the delicious taste. I could drink two and still walk in a straight line. Youth...

Actually, water is the perfect drink -- straight out of the tap. You can drink it all day long and still be able to type a post without falling down in the process. Great stuff! Hic.

Water? WATER! Slooowly he turned, inch by inch, step by step...

It was water what killed my sainted old Da. He mistook a glass of it for a glass of gin and the shock was just too much for him.

Water is a fine drink for some but alas I am alergic. Besides, I hear that that hydrogen Dioxide isn't really that good for you

As we used to say in chemistry

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I heard that the reason W. C. Fields refused to drink water was, as he himself put it, "Fish fuck in it."

Um. HO2?

Dihydrogen monoxide might be better for you. ;-)

Let us not quibble over atoms. Neither HO2 nor H2O have a place in polite company.
If we must talk about chemistry then we should discuss the science of mixology. A modern form of alchemy in which one can actually turn lead (or in this case Vermouth) into gold.
The most famous mixological instructions come from Ian Fleming. However another Brit had instructions that directly contradicted Bond's. That was W.Somerset Maugham who said, "Martinis should always be stirred, not shaken, so that the molecules lie sensuously on top of one another."

I think that, in the name of science, we should hold extensive independent blind (drunk) tests.

I think people who drink are insecure and are so weak minded they can't face reality.
