I think your memory might be a bit off. There was an analog videodisc format which used the variations in capacitance between a conductive disc substrate and an electrode deposited on a diamond stylus which rode grooves with hill-and-dale modulation, but it was developed by RCA and called SelectaVision.

Yes, I may be way off, my memory having been walloped by a stroke a couple of years back, and the events I recall are fairly distant in time.

My memory now, false or not, was that the device was developed by Philips (or so the gut claimed), and was different from the RCA device (which I recall the Philips-Thorn EMI guy mentioning). I "remember" the recording method being digital, not analog.

Capacitive "reductance" is the term stuck in my mind, but you may indeed be right about it being capacitive "reactance."

I recall the guy saying that Thorn EMI and Philips were working together because Thorn EMI had the rights to a ton of music, while Philips had the engineering breakthrough.

Again, my memories may be way, way off. Indeed, your term, "CED," seems to ring a bell. I do very vividly recall the fellow laughing at the CD work being done. I'll try to find further information that can confirm or discredit my recollections.
