I had wondered if Google actually made their trends public, and it turns out they do. Really interesting stuff.

For instance, the trend for "atheist" shows how often it's appeared in searches since 2004:

Looks like it's most often searched-for in Croatia (?!), and the city where it's most often searched-for is Austin, TX.

Unfortunately, I the graph is without units and so I can only tell relative trends. For instance, in mid 2005, it hit its low point. In late 2007, it hit its high point. But is the difference between low and high 10%, 100%, or what?

The gray bar with the years on it is zero. The first horizontal line above that is 1.0 (the average traffic for "atheist" across all years). The line above that is 2.0, etc.

The data looks like it ranges from about 0.92 (mid 2005) to 2.0 (late 2007, when The God Delusion was published).

Ok, so that helps. Still, it would be interesting to know volume. That is, how much was "atheist" searched for in relation to, say, "Tiger Woods"?

The term "Assyriology" didn't hit the threshold for even showing up at all! (Imagine!)

Somewhere, there's a way to see the top searches over a period of time (hour, day, etc.), right?

(Edit: I know they have a Top 10 list, but it still doesn't seem to give any absolute measurements-- unless I'm missing something)

I think I know why it is searched for most in Austin. There is a public access TV show called The Atheist Experience (also downloadable in a podcast) put on by a group of Atheists in the area. They do like to stir up trouble there in Austin.

But you can do exactly that. The scale is the same for both terms.

Check out science versus religion. And science versus religion versus "tiger woods"
