Some guy objected to the nativity display on his town's library and now it looks like they're going after him.

Tyson e-mailed me after learning of my previous post. Here is what he had to say:

I am the Elwood Public Library patron who complained about the nativity scene. I need help here #8211; these people do not think the law applies to them. Please share this information with your readers. There is now a witch hunt against me, and I am seriously fearful of someone hurting me and my family. Please take a look at this link: http://www.elwoodindiana.org/elwood-library-nativity-display If you notice the signing of the name, this is a library employee that started this. If you read the comments, you will see what I am dealing with here. This is the PG version of what people are saying about me. There are other sites that people are posting to that you must have a membership to view, which are definitely rated R.

The remarkable thing about this lengthy and publicly available thread of opinions is that it was started by an employee of the library! Just imagine that for a second. You encounter something which you suspect may be a violation of the law, and you bring it to the attention of someone in authority at the institution. Then you discover that you have been rudely insulted in a public forum by an employee of the institution.

Crap, you have to be registered to see the link the guy provides in his letter.

PZ Myers has also picked up on this.

EDIT: Here's a thread, stored in google cache that the Atheist Revolution person had linked to:

http colon //74.125.45.132/search?q=cache%3Awww.elwoodindiana.org%2Felwood-library-nativity-display&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

(just copy and paste the whole thing into your browser window, replacing the "http colon" with "http://" etc. and it'll get you there. Or, just click on the link the atheist revolution blogger gives!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Far worse than the hickville bigotry of a sectarian religious display in a public building, Nancy Sumner, a public employee, is now stirring up a mob scene that is extremely dangerous.

I'd say the first thing to do is ask a friendly attorney to recommend a reliable armed private security firm to protect Tyson and his family, day and night. Money needs to come from Americans United, Freedom from Religion, or somebody, fast. I'd be happy to donate to any such fund. Were he closer to where I live, I'd be there to offer my meager protection, sitting on his roof at night with a camera and cell phone at the very least.

Second, this man needs legal representation. This thing could easily get very violent in a flash, as can be read between the lines of a lopsided Chicago Tribune article:
After learning of the complaint, about 30 people rallied Monday outside the library about 40 miles north of Indianapolis in support of the display, said Becky Capps, who attends Joy Christian Church in Elwood.

Scott told The Herald Bulletin of Anderson that more than 90 area residents also signed a note of support for the Nativity scene.

After speaking with a lawyer about the complaint, she decided to keep the scene of the baby Jesus on display until Friday – the day after Christmas, as has been the custom.

Scott said this was the first time anyone had taken issue with the display in the city of about 9,000 people.

Although the Nativity is a symbol of Christianity, she insists that scene is not intended as an endorsement of the religion.

. . .

Pastor James Stout of Joy Christian Church said he believed Christianity and American values were one in the same.

“This is a Christian country that was founded on Christian principles,” he said.

[My emphasis.]
We have to help Tyson, and stop the people of Elwood from beginning a violent reign of terror.

Would that this behavior were not typical amongst many superstitions -- "Believe as I do or I'll hate you and find a way to make you suffer," just as the religious texts, notably the collective Abrahamic drivel (Bible, Quran Torah), instruct. Looking at it historically, one comes of the opinion that creating fear is the only way that this vicious nonsense can survive. Thus it has always been.
