It is said that the wise man heeds the mistakes of others and learns from them. Evidently, this doofus is unclear on the concept:
A Mississippi lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require textbooks to include a disclaimer describing evolution as a "controversial theory" and advising students to keep an "open mind" to other explanations for the origin of life.

Rep. Gary Chism introduced the legislation, House Bill 25, earlier this month. The bill has been referred to two committees, Education and Judiciary A.

The proposal, if enacted, would require the State Board of Education to include the 200-word disclaimer on the inside front cover of textbooks that include evolution topics.
the disclaimer sez:

"The word 'theory' has many meanings, including: systematically organized knowledge; abstract reasoning; a speculative idea or plan; or a systematic statement of principles," the opening paragraph of the bill states. "Scientific theories are based on both observations of the natural world and assumptions about the natural world. They are always subject to change in view of new and confirmed observations."

"This textbook discusses evolution, a controversial theory some scientists present as a scientific explanation for the origin of living things. No one was present when life first appeared on earth. Therefore, any statement about life's origins should be considered a theory," the proposal continues.

"Evolution refers to the unproven belief that random, undirected forces produced living things. There are many topics with unanswered questions about the origin of life which are not mentioned in your textbook, including: the sudden appearance of the major groups of animals in the fossil record (known as the Cambrian Explosion); the lack of new major groups of other living things appearing in the fossil record; the lack of transitional forms of major groups of plants and animals in the fossil record; and the complete and complex set of instructions for building a living body possessed by all living things."

I vote for "Stupid." If passed, this bill could cost the State of MS a great deal of time and money, as similar did in Cobb County and Dover, and they can ill afford to lose much of either in these days of Bush-instigated shortages.

Yep, really stupid!

On a related matter, and speaking of stupidity, TX is going through something of the same thing. AiG has a statement concerning it:
A bumper sticker often seen on cars bearing a Texas license plate reads, “Don't mess with Texas.” In the Lone Star state this week, the science curriculum has been “messed with” by evolutionists in what has become the latest battle in the creation/evolution wars in America. Unfortunately, some in the media have incorrectly portrayed the evolution-doubters as the ones who started this skirmish, when in reality it was the state's evolutionist community that brought on the controversy when pro-evolution activists sought to remove a key phrase from the state's science curriculum.
Here's the part I like:
Answers in Genesis, though not active in lobbying school boards and introducing legislation on origins issues, is well known as a national advocate of science curricula that foster the development of critical-thinking skills in students and expose them to the problems with the evolutionary model. But the evolutionary establishment in Texas wants none of that, which raises the questions: is the evolutionary model in such bad shape that it needs protection, and don't educators trust students to make informed decisions for themselves?
These clowns might not actually lobby to have creationist crap taught in any schools, but their Creation Crock Museum of Biblical fabrication and outright lies seems to encourage a lot of classes to visit.

I'll call "liar," myself:
"Evolution refers to the unproven belief that random, undirected forces produced living things. There are many topics with unanswered questions about the origin of life which are not mentioned in your textbook, including: the sudden appearance of the major groups of animals in the fossil record (known as the Cambrian Explosion); the lack of new major groups of other living things appearing in the fossil record; the lack of transitional forms of major groups of plants and animals in the fossil record; and the complete and complex set of instructions for building a living body possessed by all living things."
"... Many topics not mentioned in your textbook, including..." And that false generalization is to be put on every textbook that mentions evolution, no matter how much it, for instance, details the Cambrian evolutionary Explosion, or details many transitional forms, or explains how DNA works.

Yes, he may also be stupid and crazy, but he doesn't really care. He's telling what he knows are lies, for Gawd. And he wants those lies printed on every evolution-related text book in Mississippi.

D'oh! So I did.

Got it fixed now, but I'll not put the Billo link here, as it is not about C/E, but another species of stupidity. I'll start a new thread with it a little later.

Thanks for the catch -- heh, I'd shit-canned the link and had to google fore it!
