In a speech that resonated with the poetry of orations as diverse as those of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and George Carlin, President Barack Obama tonight addressed the nation from the Oval Office of the White House.
"I am here tonight to address a phenomenon which has been sweeping the nation," said Obama, "to use what President Teddy Roosevelt called the 'bully pulpit' of my office to bring some sanity to our nation.
"The United States is a land of ideals, and this is in may ways a fine thing," said the President. "But the matter which I lay before you tonight demonstrates one of the disadvantages of idealism. The matter, of course, is 'Obamamania.'
"My fellow citizens, let me put this succinctly: Get a life!
"Like every one of you, I am simply a naked ape. I am not immortal, I am not a 'Magic Negro,' I am not King Arthur, returned from Avalon, and I am most certainly not some kind of Christ figure. In fact, I have no unique qualities that many, many of you do not fully share.
"In my inaugural address, I tried my utmost to express how difficult the road ahead will be for America. I am convinced we will be able to meet our challenges, but only if we all work together to solve them. As a fallible human being, I will sometimes, perhaps often, be wrong about courses of action we should take. I will need your ideas, your help, if we are to, united, overcome our nation's difficulties. You may sometimes find that I have not listened to you, or understood you. When that happens -- and it inevitably will -- our nation needs you to hold my feet to the fire. What we don't need is for you to think I'm some kind of tin God.
"America, please stop this hero worship, and get a freaking life!"

That was delicious! When I told my daughter about my "get a life" parody this afternoon, she mentioned that skit. Great Minds Think Alike, though some of us take a few more decades to do so.
