The 1744 wreck of the Royal Navy HMS VIctory has reportedly be found.
If this pans out, it will be a whopper of a catch, with up to 4 tons of gold and the largest compliment of "bronze cannons in the world".
See Halfmooner's re for Wiki link info.

A bit of Wiki about the ship.
The link you gave is one of those tricky ones that doesn't seem to work right when the URL is inserted in text. Must be the parentheses. I've had trouble with those, too.

Here it is, plain. The following must be cut and pasted into the address bar, or you will be seeing the article on Nelson's Victory, the one which is still in Portsmouth:

This is a really exciting find! I hope the Brits and the salvagers work out an equitable salvage agreement, and that marine archaeologists are in charge, or put in charge, of the operation.

Strange...it worked on preview. Thanks HM.

Yes, exciting find indeed! These fighting sails were the tremendous battleships of their day. This one, with a crew of over a 1,000 men going down with the ship, must have been a real sight to see in its hay-day with over a 100 bronze cannons bristling from all sides. Certainly a menacing projection of power for the British.

I recall a Time-Life book series, "The Seafarers - Fighting Sail", describing these beomouths using up to three acres of sail canvas, with up to five miles of rope rigging. Typically, a 100 acres of oak trees would be required for the ship building. It literally took a king's randsom and years to build these massive sailing ships.

The age when the seas were dominated by the stylized warfare of the great "Ships of the Line" is endlessly fascinating to me.

I've read all of Patrick O'Brian's sea novels, and will soon start on the Horatio Hornblower series. Science fiction author David Weber loves that era so much he's even translated it into the far future, in his "Honorverse" series.

I (obviously) am inviting others to share my addiction.

There's a short tutorial, how-to, here to address (pun intended) this quirk.

Little bit of a CNN video update here.

At this time, it sounds like a watery line in the sand has been drawn by the British government on its ownership claim of the wreck.
