Darwinism: Avoiding accountability - the textbook two-step
O'Leary
At African Ota Benga - the missed link, I posted a comment I thought I would enlarge on:

In my experience, in order to avoid acknowledging Darwinism's contributions to racism, typical Darwinists perform a little two-step: Darwin = good non-racist; Haeckel = bad racist.

So we blame the “bad” German [WWII losers] for what every “good” British/North American Darwinist [WWII winners] really thought.

And for all I know, what every actual living Darwinist really thinks today.

Otherwise, why can't they just acknowledge the racism, repent and apologize for it, and get past it? Why are textbooks full of explanations about how Darwin didn't really support it (which I discovered to be false when introduced to his actual writings on the subject - but how many students are?)
Words fail me -- well almost.

Denyse, my dear, little flibbertigibbet, it makes not the slightest difference if Darwin (a staunch abolitionist, by the bye) was a raving white supremacist and a founder of the Klan, his Theory of Evolution remains correct. Yer just gonna have to suck that up, babe.

I challenge anyone to find modern evolutionary scientists who agree with Hitler and Haekel.

It also matters not if Haekel and Darwin might have called themselves "Darwinists" and twisted aspects of the Theory of Evolution into nonsense to serve their hatreds. They were still racist bastards who promoted pseudoscientific crap to perpetuate stereotypes of race and antisemitism that had been developed for centuries by both the Catholic and Protestant faiths.

For instance, the church fathers often led pograms against the Jews. They believed the Jews were an inferior and evil race. That's how Hitler and Haekel thought. "And for all I know" (to coin a phrase) what every actual living Religious Rightist really thinks today.

Well, you know, it never happens that Christians don't twist their own book to justify all sorts of horrible things, and they haven't been doing it for a lot longer than the 150 years since Darwin published. Just never happens. It didn't even happen twice in the last two weeks, did it?

I wonder how Darwin figures into the slave trade? Or manifest destiny?

We need to get back to traditional Christian values, I tells ya!

The really sad/hilarious part of it all is that Homo the sap, as a species, has never been anything but racist.

Our Denyse is falling into the common fallacy of "shoot the messenger." She/they cannot refute the message, therefore they attack Darwin on any grounds they can come up with, the facts of the matter not withstanding. "Darwin was a racist scumbag" sounds pretty good until you put in into context.

But then the ID folks don't seem to worry much about such niggling matters as context and accuracy, and that's what makes the whole thing fun. Gotta love 'em!

I've heard Roddy McDowell say that too.

Anecdotal, but interesting.

I saw an interview with Roddy McDowall. At one point he was talking about "Planet of the Apes" and he said when they took breaks they would stay in costume because of the amount of time and effort it took to apply the masks and such. He went on to say that when they took their breaks that the Chimps would sit with the chimps, the gorillas would sit with the gorillas, and the Orangutans would sit with the Orangutans, no matter what the race of the person behind the masks.

Sorry, no link, just something I heard and found interesting.

My, that is interesting, isn't it? I'd love to see a further study conducted along these lines.
