Marketplace, a consumer affairs program on the CBC, aired the following this evening, highlighting yet another fraudulent 'medical' miracle device, the EPFX.

It runs about 22 minutes, and is well worth it.

The comments below the video are interesting - several who call it one-sided, are certain they or others have been helped, and/or claim it works via quantum biofeedback or some other such made-up term which scientists will (it's claimed) eventually realize is The Answer to all problems.

This whole thing looked familiar. Google helped me remember that I'd read the Seattle Times' expose on the machine & the guy behind it, back in 2007.

This blogspot page isn't very active, but has a number of links pertinent to this device & its "inventor", and also to the placebo effect in general.

Another pile of homeopathic crap. Here's Bad Science's take on it, replete with video.
We've all come to accept that the hypochondriac pages are somehow exempt from the transaction constraints of “cash for précised true facts” in the newsagents. So you will be unsurprised to hear that several intolerances were diagnosed with the Quantum QXCI machine, each requiring extensive treatment. And not just some healthy fruit and veg. No: only an idiot would pay £150 to be told to eat more fruit and veg. There were also 120 pills, of varying colour and size.

What is the mysterious QXCI machine? Sadly the Telegraph seem to have kept the most interesting details from us, for this is no less than the Quantum Xrroid Consciousness Interface, “the most advanced medical assessment and therapy device in the world today” according to the distributors. It loops all 200 trillion human cells within a 55-channel biofeedback system to gather bioenergetic data at nano-second speeds, creating optimal wellness. It is covered in lights and switches, with special sciencey connectors like the printer ports on an old computer, and it looks like the equipment on an intensive care unit.
Pity the hypochondriac, for he shall never be robust. Even though he spends all of his wealth to that end, his fate will ever be the vulture's repast.

That was a heck of a good job of investigative TV journalism, something we don't see much of anymore in the US. Health Canada needs to respond by banning this device from Canadian shores.

I wouldn't mind nearly as much if this quack nostrum device were being peddled exclusively to hypochondriacs. It's that it is being used on people with potentially terminal diseases that metaphorically kills me -- and literally kills them.

Bill Nelson and his crew of creeps need to be rounded up, thrown in the slammer, and tried for homicide.

And the man has his own theme song!

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
Carl Sagan - 1996

Anyone else think that it was Sylvia Brown?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Yeah. Were I a cross-dresser, that's exactly the look I'd be trying for.
