..... to enrole your kids in a Texas public school, the fool Perry considers this knuckle-dragger to replace McLeroy as school board head.
Sub-subminimal
Every job comes with a set of minimum standards. An entry-level volunteer firefighter, for example, must meet a basic standard of physical fitness as well as be able to demonstrate a basic capacity for learning the craft of firefighting and a basic commitment to keeping the community safe.

Every once in a while, though, someone slips through the screening process and reminds us that every job also comes with a set of sub-minimal requirements. A volunteer firefighter, for example, shouldn't also be an arsonist on the side.
Read on -- Dunbar is a vicious enemy of any education not Bible-based and really, for a lawyer, she has some very sreange ideas of what the Founding Fathers intended for the country, and a bedlamite's interpretation of the Constitution. If she should be comfirmed, TX textbook standards will plummet like a stone.

PZ has the link.

On the other hand, Cynthia Dunbar's appointment might solidify the opposition to the anti-larnin' know-nothing fundies even more than McLeroy did. The public may begin to panic. McLeroy had (comparatively speaking only) the good sense to try to conceal some of his prejudices and his theocratic agenda.

Dunbar doesn't. With Dunbar, you get exactly what she promises/ threatens. She openly hates public education, and makes it crystal clear she'll do everything in her power to wreck it. Her portrait, along with St. Augustine's, is posted next to the entry for "pious anti-intellectual" in the dictionary. It's not the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" that she thinks Adam and Eve ate from, but the "Tree of Knowledge," period. With her extremist views, I suspect that many Texans will be become more worried about their kids' real futures than about their putative souls.

If Perry appoints Dunbar, she's just the kind of straw that could finally begin break the GOP camel's back in Texas. Perry would be correctly seen as reacting to the rejection of McLeroy's divisive extremism by appointing an even more openly extreme anti-education chair to the Board. That's been the habit of the NeoCons: Whenever something doesn't work, first pray, then concentrate on doing even more of it. They have no self-correcting sense.

Still, I've got a hunch that Perry has more political sense than to appoint this batshit insane woman. But I would put no money at all behind that hunch.

That's crossed my mind and it might be correct but I as well, wouldn't bet the mortgage equity on it without a lot better odds than current.

On the other hand, Perry's made a career of sucking up to the super-Christian loony-toons and TX is not in short supply of them. They would/will be delighted at her nomination even if she doesn't get confirmed. Correct me if I am wrong, but Perry has an election coming up in '10 and he's gonna need the 'toons.

Heh, TX politics are rather like three-card monte; it's fun but there's no way, no how you can trust the dealer.

Hi steinhenge, welcome back! Good to see ya again!

I'd not heard of Lowe, but she reads like another fundie froot-loop; about as smart as a can of bait, but gots the faith, praise Jesus!

The problem here is that the textbook companies can't afford to publish a special edition just for TX. As TX has a very large school-age population, it would end up being overly costly, so they must do a single edition for all of the states. Thus, that which TX gets, everyone gets.

And, of course, there are Constitutional issues to consider -- that these boneheads think they know all about, but in reality, know doodly-squat. I think that the ACLU might have a lot of fun with TX this year, and that unfortunate state might end up spending a lot of money on nonsense that it can ill afford.

PZ thinks that Lowe is just going to be Dunbar's lapdog, anyway.

We'll see how it goes.

Whoever gets the Chairmanship of the board doesn't make any difference in the unbalance of the fundy rightist extremists versus plain old more-or-less pro-education conservatives. McLeroy and Dunbar are still going to be there to vote and influence. I would have been happier with Cynthia Dunbar, the craziest of the crazies, being the Chair. That way the public's disillusion with the whole Gang of Seven on the board would come quicker.

I think this was a smart move by Gov. Perry. It helps to hide his outright Christian Nationalist, anti-edumacation and pro-secessionist agendas without harming any of them.
