What if you held a Gay Pride festival, and more than a quarter of your nation's entire population showed up to help you celebrate?

That's what happened in Iceland yesterday, when 80,000 to 90,000 out of a population of 300,000 Icelanders attended the annual Gay Pride walk in Reykjavik.

During St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the USA, the slogan is, "Everyone's Irish." It strikes me as really cool that Icelanders apparently think something similar about being gay, at least once a year.

"Everybody gay!" ~~ Peter Griffin

I'm so old that I remember when having a gay, old time was just partying down. Are we seeing the beginning of a return to better times?

Nah. We've still got the often closeted, religious fruitbats to contend with.

Still! That's a wonderful display of tolerance! Good job vikings! Now go and burn down some monastery and it'll be perfect!

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
Carl Sagan - 1996

It's really a fine act of solidarity. I think that it might be analogous to a quarter of a fair-sized city's population, including churchgoers, coming to a rally support the rights of atheists.
