Just got back from a week at Killarney Provincial Park, about 4 1/2 hours north of Toronto. Besides the relaxation, great scenery, good canoeing, and fun times, 13 year-old Derek managed to boat the biggest fish of his life, a smallmouth bass that in my guesstimation was about 4lbs.
Later I may try adjusting the size of the pic until his hands match, get the exact length, get the height and approximate girth, and use a table to work out a more accurate weight. But for now just remembering the experience and seeing him with a big smile for about four days straight is good enough!

We let it go. That was about 8am, and I wasn't about to canoe all the way back to the camp site so that we could cut it up and do a fish breakfast. Also, being that it was a provincial park I like to practice catch and release, just feels right to me. If it had been a nice big tasty perch or walleye however, well, I might have got that paddle working mighty quick! |
