What on Earth? #59: Troublesome Color

Skin color has long been a troublesome social issue. A creek in these hills and narrow valleys marked the epicenter of an extended family that, due to their heritage, knew all too well the social consequences of having a skin hue that was quite different from their neighbors.

1. What's the name of the family?

2. What's the name of the "holler" shown in the aerial images?

3. Explain the nature of the skin color issue with which the family had to deal.

The "Blue" Fugate family, who settled along the banks of Troublesome Creek, Hazard County, Kentucky, suffered from methemoglobinemia, a rare hereditary condition. The disease is associated with an enzyme deficiency which diminishes the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, causing victims skin to take on a bluish hue.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.
